TNF-a-induced activation of CAM expression argues for the major target of action of isoliquiritigenin possibly mediated via the transcriptional mechanisms. Licorice root extract contains many different subclasses of flavonoids, for instance isoflavans, isoflavones, and chalcones 1214 ; . Isoliquiritigenin, a flavonoid with a simple chalcone structure 4, 29, 49-trihydroxychalcone in licorice root extract, is regarded as a promising lead as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent 19, 20 ; . Isoliquiritigenin has previously been reported to suppress cyclooxygenase-2, known to play an important role in inflammation, and to induce apoptosis in mouse colon cancer cells 28 ; . The present study revealed that isoliquiritigenin blocked pro-inflammatory cytokine-induced protein expression of VCAM-1, E-selectin, and PECAM-1 at transcriptional levels and blunted THP-1 monocyte-endothelial cell interaction. The reduction in VCAM-1 noted in this study suggests an effect of isoliquiritigenin on endothelial function. It should be pointed out that co-culture of HUVEC with isoliquiritigenin and TNF-a did not cause toxicity data not shown ; , as determined by MTT assay. In a previous study 29 ; , it was shown that isoliquiritigenin was capable of lowering the levels of both ICAM-1 and VCAM1 on mouse myeloid leukemia cells. On the other hand, the present study showed that the isoflavone formononetin and its glycoside, ononin, were inactive in inhibiting CAM expression of activated endothelial cells and in hindering monocyte-endothelial cell interaction. We have reported that.

A gene known as the fragile histidine triad FHIT ; gene has been identified as a tumor suppressor gene and shown to be altered in numerous types of cancer. Eighty percent of women with breast cancer who have a defect in the BRCA2 gene also have loss of heterozygosity in the FHIT gene, compared with 40% of women whose breast cancer is not associated with an inherited genetic defect known as sporadic breast cancer ; . Based on data presented by Carlo Croce's group, this suppressor gene seems to be more ubiquitous. In his award lecture Dr Croce emphasized that this new suppressor gene could be a very common finding in many tumors, probably more so than a mutated p53. Other interesting data concerned colorectal cancer: Up to 5% of the general population is estimated to have HNPCC, most often due to changes in one of five.

Nevertheless, a number of centres now offer a transplant service to such patients. Little information is available from these centres on how many patients with end-stage alcoholic liver disease have been excluded from their transplant programmes because of the presence of other alcohol-related disorders. Patients are rigorously evaluated before being accepted by transplant services, and it is to assumed that other organ damage is diligently sought, and, if identified and found to be clinically significant, would be a contraindication, relative or definite, to candidacy. Where transplantation has been undertaken in patients with alcoholic liver disease, outcomes are good, both in terms of survival and quality of life, and do not differ substantially from those reported in patients with non-alcoholic liver disease Bird et al., 1990; Kumar et al., 1990; Knechtle et al., 1992; Lucey et al., 1993 ; Fig. 3 ; . Importantly, it increases 2-year survival in the patients with the most severely decompensated disease Poynard et al., 1994 ; . It was initially suggested that only individuals who had successfully abstained from alcohol for 6 months or more should be considered as transplant candidates in order to lessen the risk of recidivism post-transplantation. Starzl et al. 1988 ; , however, refuted this suggestion and showed, in an early series, that 1-year recidivism rates were low even in individuals drinking up to the time of transplantation. Campbell etal. 1993 ; warned, however, that early recidivism rates should be treated with caution, because in their series the early recidivism rate of 11.5% rose to 32% by 3 years post-transplant. In many of the reported series recidivism rates were consistently higher in individuals who were drinking up to the time of transplantation compared with those who were abstinent beforehand Bird et al., 1990; Kumar et al., 1990 ; . Indeed, Osorio et al. 1994 ; have shown that the single most important predictor of abstinence post-transplantation is abstinence before the transplant procedure. However, this view has recently been challenged by Howard et al. 1994 ; , following their controlled assessment of 20 individuals who had been transplanted for alcoholic liver disease some 1-6 years previously. All had remained abstinent from alcohol in the 7-10 months following surgery when medical supervision was at its closest, but there. 2. "Licorice is very sweet and contains glycyrrhizic acid which is fifty times sweeter than sugar. It helps support the adrenal glands and stimulate the excretion of hormones from the adrenal cortex. It has also been shown to have estrogen activity in animal studies and may be used to stabilize the menstrual cycle when coming off of "the Pill." It is excellent for the lungs and spleen. It has been used for coughs, sore throat, asthma, stomach and duodenal ulcers, hepatitis, hysteria and food poisoning. It is also known to be a good antioxidant." 4."Medicinal Action and Uses: The action of Liquorice is demulcent, moderately pectoral and emollient. It is a popular and well-known remedy for coughs, consumption, and chest complaints generally most notably bronchitis, and is an ingredients in almost all popular cough medicines on account of its valuable soothing properties." 5. "Beneficial for hypoglycemia, bronchitis, colitis, diverticulosis, gastritis, stress, colds, nausea, and inflammation. Cleanses the colon, promotes adrenal gland function, decreases muscle or skeletal spasms, and increases the fluidity of mucus from the lungs and bronchial tubes. Has estrogen-like hormone effects; changes the voice. Studies show licorice root stimulates the production of interferon. Warning: Do not use if you have high blood pressure." 6. "The root contains glycrrhizin, 50 times sweeter than sucrose, which encourages the production of hormones such as hydrocortisone. This helps to explain its anti-inflammatory action and also its role in stimulating the adrenal cortex after steroid therapy. The root can help and lomotil.

Ceptable heart rate. An adequately digitalized patient has a serum level of 1.5 to 2 ng when atrial fibrillation is being treated Inhibitions approximating 40 per cent or less, results were not always consistent. This was noted in the tests involving urethan and purine hydrochloride with H.Ep. #3 and A-methopterin with H.S. #1, in which four discrepant tests were in cluded. These low tumor inhibitions were found to fall randomly into the "or + categories. In the case of fumagillin and H.S. #1, where two of the three tests gave + inhibitions, the effect was but 11 per cent deficient of the + category. DISCUSSION The availability of a method for growing human neoplasms in large numbers of laboratory animals made pertinent the possibility of their use in ex perimental chemotherapy screening systems. Two transplantable human tumors, the sarcoma H.S. #1 and the carcinoma H.Ep. #3, were selected for possible applicability to such purpose. It was recognized and appreciated that these neoplasms might not be representative of all types of human tumors, but their advantages were such as to lead to a determination of their suitability for experimental chemotherapy. Stock enumerated several criteria for assessing the usefulness of a tumor for experimental chem otherapy. These included rapid rate of growth, high percentage of takes, high degree of lethality, uniform growth, sensitivity to potential anti-tumor agents, and lack of response to the effects of inanition 17 ; . Data presented on most of these criteria indicate that the two human tumors, H.S. #1 and H.Ep. #3, satisfactorily fulfill many of these requirements. The rapid rates of growth of these two human transplantable tumors permitted evaluations to be made 9-11 days post-implantation for H.Ep. #3 and 11-12 days for H.S. #1. There were in dications that these termination points for ex periments could be reduced to the 7th day for H.Ep. #3 and to the 9th day for H.S. #1, if desirable. The degree of variability of tumor growth has always had an important influence on the evalua tion of a growth-inhibiting effect. The coefficients of variation of H.Ep. #3 and H.S. #1 tumor weights expressed the degrees of variability of these growths, that for H.Ep. #3 54-60 per cent ; being somewhat less than that for H.S. #1 72-73 per cent ; . The coefficients of variation for weight did not change to any great extent in the 12-month period illustrated in Table 2. When data were compared for two 3-month periods separated by 1 year, no significant fluctuations in average tumor weight were noted. The absence of large changes and lomustine. Licorice has also been associated with inhibition of platelet aggregation145 and should therefore be avoided in patients with bleeding and or hemostatic disorders. It should be used with caution in patients receiving anticoagulants or drugs with antiplatelet activity.
Herbalists also apply it in a variety of complaints, especially related to the stomach and spleen, which benefit from the root's sweet flavor and warming, moistening nature. Licorice is generally employed in small amounts to harmonize formulas. In the West, we use it not only as a pre-eminent adaptogen, but also as an expectorant, immunomodulator, antiviral and anti-inflammatory. Licorice works specifically at the adrenal level, helping to alleviate adrenal insufficiency and thus promoting healthy HPA-axis function. Licorice also impacts the SAS, offering support in acute stress.18 In addition to licorice's impact on the nervous system via endocrine regulation, direct neurological effects have been suggested by laboratory investigations. Research using high doses equivalent to about 10 g in humans ; of an aqueous extract demonstrated a positive impact on learning and memory in mice, which may be due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as facilitation of cholinergic transmission.22, 23 Further, recent research also suggested that the same dose of aqueous extract possesses an anti-depressant activity in mice, comparable to that of imipramine and fluoxetine.24 The investigators suggested regulation of norepinephrine and dopamine as a probable mode of activity. In keeping with Chinese tradition, I tend to use licorice in many formulas to harmonize the activity and flavor of the other herbs. I also find that the sweet and warming qualities of the plant give it a building nature, similar to that of food. TCM asserts that by nourishing the stomach and spleen, one improves the ability to gain sustenance from food ; . Licorice is a primary remedy for individuals who are chronically exhausted and can no longer maintain energy sufficient to function normally particularly menopausal women ; . Reishi Ganoderma lucidum ; , one of China's premier adaptogens, has long been used in TCM to prevent aging, maintain memory, tonify the chi and calm the shen which can be defined as the vital force of human consciousness25 ; . Restless shen can cause anxiety, depression, agitation and insomnia. As the Mushroom of Immortality, reishi not only and lovenox.
